When callas first announced pdfToolbox 17, the details were thin. We wrote about the early signals at the time. Since its release at the end of April 2026, the full feature set is clear, and it is a release aimed squarely at production rather than headlines. As callas CEO Dietrich von Seggern put it, the focus was on enabling automated workflows "to run faster, more reliably, and with greater flexibility."
Transparency note: autoM8.print is a callas software channel partner. This is our practical view of the release, based on how these features apply in real print workflows.
Whitespace detection: finding room for marks automatically
A new check finds empty space within a PDF. That sounds minor until you run a print-and-cut or wide-format operation, where registration marks, barcodes or job identifiers have to be placed somewhere they will not collide with the artwork. Until now that usually meant a fixed position, which fails on awkward designs, or a person placing marks by hand.
With whitespace detection, a workflow can locate suitable areas based on rules for size and distribution, and place marks there automatically. For businesses producing large volumes of one-off or irregular jobs, this removes a real manual step.
Bleed for repeating patterns
Textile, wallpaper and decor printers have a specific problem: adding bleed to a repeating pattern by simply stretching the edge breaks the repeat. pdfToolbox 17 can extend repeating patterns and generate bleed while keeping the pattern structure intact. If you print continuous or tiled designs, this is one of the most useful changes in the release.
VDP optimisation
Variable data and transactional files are often large and slow to RIP because static content, such as backgrounds and logos, is repeated on every record. pdfToolbox 17 can separate static and dynamic content so that high-volume variable jobs process faster downstream.
The Imposition Wizard
pdfToolbox has been able to impose for some time, but configuring it required scripting knowledge. The new Imposition Wizard creates simple layouts such as step and repeat, fill page and booklets, with a live preview. Settings can be saved and reused in automated workflows, and experienced users can refine the generated configuration. Chief Evangelist David van Driessche described it as a way to make powerful functionality more approachable. For the wider picture on imposition, see our guide to imposition and ganging automation.
The smaller changes that matter in production
Van Driessche also made a point we agree with: in production, where imperfect files are routine, the smaller improvements often matter most. Version 17 includes:
- Better handling of technical lines such as cut lines
- Improved PDF inspection for diagnosing difficult files
- More JavaScript functionality and improvements to Process Plans
- Support for converting WebP images, a format increasingly found in files assembled from web content
- More options for analysing and correcting problematic content
For integrators: Docker and a REST API
callas now provides Docker images with a REST API and queueing support. For web-to-print platforms, MIS vendors and anyone building pdfToolbox into a larger system, that makes deployment and scaling considerably simpler. Preflight profiles can also be exported with the sidecar file needed by pdfToolbox Portal. Alongside the release, callas launched pdfNest, a separate nesting module for OEM partners that calculates efficient layouts for multiple PDFs on a sheet.
Already on 17? Get 17.1
callas has since documented a problem with PDFs generated by ChatGPT, which embed Content Credentials in a way that breaks PDF/X compliance and can trip up preflight. Version 17.1 removes the faulty entry automatically when any Fixup is applied, while keeping the credentials. We cover this in more detail in our post on AI in prepress.
Should you upgrade?
If you have an active maintenance agreement, version 17 is included, so the question is simply when to test and deploy it. If your maintenance has lapsed, it is worth reading the hidden cost of letting maintenance lapse before deciding. Also remember that pdfToolbox now uses Wallet and Cartridge licensing, which affects how installations check in with the licence server.
The strongest cases for upgrading are print-and-cut, wide format, textile and decor, variable data, and anyone who wants simpler imposition without scripting. For pricing and upgrade options for Desktop, Server, CLI or SDK, use our contact form and we will come back to you with a quote for your setup. We can also help you test version 17 against your own files and workflows before you commit.
